Guitar Amp Repair & Amp Techs Near You

Your amp hums louder than it used to, cuts out when it warms up or hasn't been switched on in ten years. Tube amps need retubes as tubes wear, a bias check when power tubes change and new filter caps as they age. The amp techs listed here handle tube amp repair from routine service to restoring vintage Fender, Marshall and Vox circuits, and several fix solid-state amps too.

One safety note: tube amps hold dangerous voltage even when unplugged. Unless you know how to safely drain a chassis, leave the inside to a tech. Shopping for an amp instead? Browse the amps directory.

How to choose an amp tech

  • Look for experience with your kind of amp: vintage tube, modern high-gain, solid-state or a specific brand. Specialties on each listing help.
  • Ask about the bench fee. Most amp techs charge a minimum to diagnose, and many credit it toward the repair.
  • Ask for a quote before work starts, and whether they call for approval if the job runs over.
  • For vintage amps, ask whether they replace only what's failing or recommend a full cap job, and why.
  • Shipping a tube amp is risky. Pack tubes separately or ask the shop how they want it sent before choosing a mail-in tech.

Common questions

How often does a tube amp need a retube?

It depends on how much and how loud the amp gets played, and power tubes wear faster than preamp tubes. Signs include lost volume, new noise or a tube that glows unevenly. A tech can test them and tell you what needs replacing.

What does biasing mean, and do I need it after a retube?

Biasing sets how much current the power tubes draw. Most amps need it after a power tube swap, since running new tubes on the old setting can shorten their life or damage the amp. Have the tech do both at once.

Is it safe to open up a tube amp myself?

Tube amp capacitors can hold a dangerous charge long after the amp is unplugged. Unless you know how to safely discharge a chassis, leave it to a tech.
