Find a Guitar Luthier Near You

A cracked top, a neck that needs resetting, a finish that's worn through to the wood. That's luthier work: structural repair, guitar refinishing, restoration and building instruments from scratch. The luthiers listed here work on acoustic and electric guitars, and several also take basses and mandolins. If your instrument needs more than adjusting, this is the list to start from.

For setups, fretwork and basic electronics, the guitar repair directory is usually faster and cheaper. Plenty of shops do both, so check each listing's specialties. If you'd rather commission a new instrument, the guitars directory lists makers who take custom orders.

How to choose a luthier

  • Match the job to the shop. Neck resets, crack repair, refinishing and custom builds are specialist work, so check each listing's specialties.
  • Ask to see similar work. Photos of past restorations or builds tell you more than a description.
  • Get the estimate in writing, and ask how they handle surprises found once the instrument is opened up.
  • For vintage instruments, ask whether the work will be period-correct and how it affects originality and value.
  • Expect a queue for big jobs. Ask for a realistic start date before you hand the instrument over.

Common questions

What's the difference between a luthier and a guitar repair tech?

The terms overlap. Luthier usually means someone trained to build instruments, so they take on structural repairs, refinishing, neck resets and full builds. Repair tech more often means setups, fretwork and electronics. Many listings here do both.

How much does a custom build cost?

As of Oct 2026, the middle half of published prices from the smaller makers in our guitars directory runs about $2,000 to $4,500 for electrics and $4,400 to $8,600 for acoustics. A one-off build from a single luthier can run higher, so ask for a quote.

How long does restoration work take?

Longer than a setup. Structural repairs and refinishing often take several weeks to a few months, partly because finish coats need time to cure. Ask for a start date and a finish estimate before you commit.
