Boutique Tube Combo Amps

A combo puts the amp and speaker in one cabinet: one thing to carry, set up and mic. Boutique tube combos are where many builders put their signature circuits, from tweed and blackface-inspired designs to British-voiced and modern high-gain amps, often hand-wired in small batches.

Because the speaker is part of the package, a combo's sound depends on the speaker and cabinet as much as the circuit. Compare wattage and speaker size together: a low-watt combo with a 12-inch speaker breaks up at volumes a club or home studio can handle, while a 40 to 50 watt combo stays clean much louder.

What to compare

  • Wattage and headroom: decide whether you want the amp to break up or stay clean at the volume you actually play.
  • Speaker size and count: a single 10 or 12 for portability, a 2x12 for a bigger sound and more weight.
  • Construction: hand-wired point-to-point or turret board versus PCB. Hand-wired amps are easier to service and mod.
  • Features: onboard reverb and tremolo, an effects loop, a master volume, and attenuation or power scaling.
  • Weight: tube combos are heavy, and a 2x12 can be a two-person carry.

Common questions

Combo or head and cab?

A combo is simpler and usually lighter overall than a head plus a separate cabinet. A head lets you change speaker cabinets and is easier to place on stage, which matters more at higher wattages.

What does hand-wired mean?

Components are wired by hand to a board or terminal strips instead of soldered to a printed circuit board. Hand-wired amps cost more to build but are easier to repair and modify, which is part of why they dominate boutique amp lineups.

How many watts do I need?

Less than most people think. 15 to 30 watts is plenty for most club gigs with a drummer, especially if the amp is mic'd. Lower-watt amps are easier to push into breakup at reasonable volumes.
